Hair Extensions on Holiday?
‘Can I wear my extensions on holiday?’
is a very common question, and in short, the answer is yes!
Hair extensions are easy to look after on holiday once you know what you’re doing! However it is really important to understand how changes in climate and environments can affect your hair extensions.
Chlorine, salt water, hard water, sun cream and sun exposure can damage and alter the colour of your extensions, but there are a few steps you can take to prevent this from happening…
Sea water, Sun cream & Chlorine: Try and keep your hair out of it as much as possible, but if you do get it wet, rinse as soon as you can in a nearby shower, take a hydrating treatment on holiday with you and if your hair becomes discoloured, use a ‘Malibu C Hard Water’ treatment. Try to avoid a messy bun if you’re planning on getting your hair wet as it’ll become tangled and difficult to untie when wet. Maybe try something manageable like a plait. Sun cream can turn your extensions a peachy/ pink colour, so make sure your hair is completely out of the way when applying and drying on your skin.
Wear an old set of hair extensions – Maybe hold off having a brand new set before holiday as you’ll be less disappointed if any damage or discolouration occurs.
UVA Rays – Protect your hair extensions from the sun as much as possible. Extensive exposure can dry out and discolour your hair so wear a hat when sunbathing and tie back.
Bring your hair extensions aftercare products on holiday – Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean you take a holiday from looking after your hair! This is the time that your extensions will need caring for the most. You will struggle to find salon quality shampoo and conditioner suitable for hair extensions in a shop you can pick up off the shelf. You will need your shampoo, conditioner, treatment, oil and heat protector.
Use a decent oil on your hair extensions after washing to keep them soft and hydrated. A good example is the Olaplex no.7 bonding oil.
Brushing wet hair extensions – don’t let your hair extensions dry before you’ve brushed it! This will causing matting and tangling. Brush your hair with a tangle teezer or specific hair extension brush, starting from the ends and working your way up to the root, gently holding onto your bonds at the top to avoid pulling. Always make sure your hair is dry at the root/ bond if hairdrying, but if you’re letting it naturally dry by the pool then brush and tie back into a manageable updo. Never sleep with wet hair extensions.
We cannot guarantee the quality of your hair extensions will remain after being worn abroad, however following this advice will help to protect them and reduce the chance of disappointment when you return.
