Hair Extension Aftercare.
Aftercare is equally as important as getting your extensions fitted correctly.
It can be really damaging to your natural hair if you’re not keeping on top of your aftercare or attending maintenance appointments on time; this can lead to breakage, tension and matting.
Aftercare is actually super easy and only takes that little bit of extra time once you’re used to it. It seems like a lot at a first glance, but a lot of it is just common sense! Maintenance/ refits are required generally every 8-10 weeks (6-8 weeks for tapes)… leave it any longer and it could cause damage and become trickier to refit. If you do struggle with remembering- feel free to rebook whilst you’re at your appointment so you never have to worry.
Aftercare is something that’s really important to us, so you will be asked to go through aftercare forms during the consultation and you will also be provided with a full aftercare guide after your fitting.
Brush your hair gently working from ends toward scalp before and after washing
Use a professional sulphate free shampoo for dry colour treated hair. NEVER use a volumising shampoo as this will raise the cuticle of the hair and can cause tangling.
Wash hair gently in cool to warm water. Do not scrub roughly whilst washing. Gently comb through hair with fingers in a downward motion while washing and rinsing.
Do not apply conditioner to scalp or near tops of extensions, too much conditioner or very oily hair can weaken the connection.
It is best not to wash more than 2-3 times a week unless you have a very oily scalp. Over washing will dry the hair.
Softly towel dry by patting with a towel before drying
Use argan oil or shine drops on the extensions ends after shampooing whilst still damp – avoid the top/ connection. Apply to ends daily if needed.
If extensions become dry and damaged, treat once to twice a week with a deep conditioner or deep repair mask.
Brush gently 2-3 times a day, brushing right up to the scalp will keep tangles from forming at the base of the extension. You can use: a boar bristle brush, a wide tooth comb (ends only), tangle teezer.
When blow drying hair, use a heat protector first and blow downward with hairs natural growth, not up into or against hair flow. Dry with fingers then style with a curling iron or straighteners if needed. Ensure roots are completely dry as damp roots can cause matting. NEVER sleep with wet or damp hair
Swimming – Wet hair with tap water, apply conditioner and braid hair before swimming to help avoid tangling. Avoid salt water and chlorine but if you do come into contact with it, rinse as soon as possible in a near by shower and put a treatment on later that day.
Tie hair back in a low pony or plaits before bed
Don’t wear your hair in a high, slicked back pony, it can cause too much tension. mid or low pony is recommended. If you do risk wearing it in a high pony, don’t do it for too long and wait a few weeks until your extensions have grown out and aren’t as close to the head.
